Make Your Own Jayne Hat

Jayne in "The Train Job" Firefly episode

LOS ANGELES – September 28, 2012 – Remember the beige visored hat Jayne Cobb wore in "The Train Job" episode of Firefly? Our favorite mercenary, played by actor Adam Baldwin, grabs the hat and declares, "Time for some thrilling heroics!" as he prepares to rob a train.

That hat was the inspiration for the autumn-colored knit hat that Ma Cobb made and sent to her son in the episode, "The Message." Firefly costume designer Shawna Trpcic says she sketched the Jayne Hat as a watercolor, found yarn at a now-defunct Santa Monica store and had a production coordinator knit the hat.

The screen-used hat was sold in 2008 at an auction to benefit Adam's charity of choice: the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides assistance to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving the U.S.
