Doctor Who Joins Quantum Mechanix
LOS ANGELES – July 21, 2010 – Quantum Mechanix Inc. (QMx) announced today that it has signed an agreement with BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), to develop and market a full line of collectibles based on the hit science-fiction television series, Doctor Who.
Premiering in 1963, the venerable British TV series is one of the most recognized entertainment brands in world. Some 31 seasons of Doctor Who have been produced, comprising 767 episodes, making it the longest running science-fiction television series worldwide. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Doctor Who is the "most successful science-fiction television series in the world,” based on ratings, DVD and book sales, and iTunes traffic.
After a 20-year hiatus, a revamped Doctor Who was launched in 2005 and is now more popular than ever. Doctor Who is sold to more than 50 territories worldwide with global DVD sales in excess of 3.5 million. And with the successful transition to Matt Smith in the titular role, the latest actor to take on the role of the time-traveling alien, Doctor Who's popularity seemed assured for years to come.
"When people ask us how we determine what shows and movies to license, we tell them first and foremost a show must tell great character-driven stories," said QMx CEO Andy Gore. "And there has never been a greater character than Doctor Who."
QMx's Doctor Who license includes screen-accurate prop replicas, animated maquettes, posters and novelties. The company is already hard at work on several products and will have prototypes on display at the QMx booth (#3251) at Comic-Con International 2010 San Diego in July.
