Here's to Saurian Brandy!
January 16, 2013 – We propose a toast with the drink of choice among many in the United Federation of Planets: Saurian brandy.
This potent potable – developed by the strong, intelligent, reptilian Saurian species – is popular among carousing Starfleet crewmen, including Captain James T. Kirk.
Created in Star Trek: The Original Series, it's been imbibed in just about every iteration of Star Trek thereafter. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard have offered Saurian brandy as refreshment in diplomatic meetings and in trade for favors.
What started out as a fantasy brew has now found its intoxicating way into popular culture. Clever earthling mixologists have engineered their own formulas. Sweet and citrusy, it's fun to concoct! We have a version of the recipe to share with you.
Saurian Brandy
1/4 cup grated orange rind
1/8 cup grated lemon rind
1 pint 100-proof vodka or brandy
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup Grade A maple syrup or simple syrup
1. Put the orange and lemon rind in a half-pint jar with 1/4 cup of liquor. Seal it and shake occasionally. Let it steep overnight.
2. Pour sugar and the remaining liquor into a 28-ounce bottle. Seal it and shake until al the sugar is dissolved, then add the maple syrup or simple syrup.
3. Filter the citrus rind extract though a fine handkerchief or coffee filter until it becomes clear.
4. Add one tablespoon of the final extract to the liquor syrup mixture and mix well. If your orange rind is more or less aromatic than average, adjust the quantity so that you have enough to hide the maple flavor (if you use maple syrup), but not so much that would make the liqueur bitter or too citrusy.
